One or two plain, pitted olives are unlikely to cause harm, but larger quantities can lead to digestive upset including vomiting, diarrhoea, and gas. Always remove the pit before offering an olive, as pits pose a choking hazard and can cause intestinal blockages or damage teeth. Avoid marinated, stuffed, or seasoned olives entirely, as ingredients such as garlic, onions, blue cheese, and alcohol are all toxic to dogs. Olive oil, whilst found in some commercial dog foods, is very calorie-dense and excessive amounts can trigger pancreatitis. If you wish to share an olive with your dog, choose a plain, unsalted, pitted variety and limit it to an occasional treat.
